How the 10-Year Option Works
The schematic below illustrates how the new option works.
 

Certification/Recertification Examination in 2004
STAGE ONE
Completion of 3 Part II Modules or 2 Part II and 1 Part IV Modules by December 2007
STAGE TWO
Completion of additional 2 Part II Modules and 1 Part IV Module by December 2010
Completion of 6 Part II Modules and 1 Part IV Module prior to applying for the Recertification Exam
Hold a currently valid, full and unrestricted medical license on the last day of Stage Two Recertification Exam in 2011
The 3-year extension is awarded.
PART II: Includes the Self-Assessment Modules (SAMs) or other approved external provider module. In the six years preceding the exam, Diplomates must complete an equivalent of 300 CME credits
STAGE THREE
Completion of additional 2 Part II Modules and 1 Part IV Module prior to applying for the recertification exam
PART IV: Depending on whether you see patients in continuity and your practice setting, the requirements for this component differ
  • Traditional practice setting / Patients seen in continuity—options include PPM, Methods in Medicine Modules (MIMMs), Patient Safety Improvement Program, a METRIC from the AAFP or other approved external provider module
  • Non-traditional practice setting / Patients not seen in continuity or not seen at all—options include MIMMs or the Patient Safety Improvement Program.
  • Recertification Exam in 2014

     

     


    Note: You will retain your 7-year certificate until you successfully complete the Stage One AND Stage Two requirements at which time the board will verify that you hold a currently valid, full and unrestricted license on the last day of Stage Two and then your certificate will be extended to 10-years.
